Effects of eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus 80/85, Dr. Eberhart Co., Austria) from Eucalptus radiata leaf on asthmatic guinea pigs were studied in vivo as compared with the intact and ovalbumin (OA)-sensitized animals. Eucalyptus oil was exposured by membrane filter (pore size : 5 §) in the head chamber at 22¡É for 10 minutes before the challenge of aerosolized-ovalbumin (OA) on the OA-sensitized guinea pigs in the double-chambered plethysmograph (HS 855). Pulmonary function test were carried out to determine the specific airway resistance (sRaw), tidal volume (TV) and respiratory rate (RR) by Pennock program. It shows that eucalyptus oil increased about 116% the sRaw at 5 mins after OA challenge as compared with control, but their sRaw decreased significantly at 4 and 24 hrs after exposure of eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus oil decrease significantly the TV and RR in intact and OA-sensitized guinea pigs, but their pulmonary function were improved completely at one day after exposure of eucalyptus oil. In the asthmatic guinea pigs. eucalyptus oil increased significantly the sRaw, and decreased significantly the TV and and RR in early asthmatic response (EAR) and late-phase asthmatic response (LAR) as compared with control. These results showed that eucalyptus oil have not¢¥ anti-asthmatic action, but salbutamol, disodium cromoglycate and dexamethasone have significant anti-asthmatic activity in EAR, not but salbutamol in LAR.
